Josh smiling for his first dental ‘photo’! (Taken with instagram)

Every year my husband an I struggle with celebrating Valentine’s Day. First, we think it’s a pretty stupid holiday that has been capitalized and made important by people trying to make a buck. [we can discuss the merits of consumerism in another post] Second, my husband’s birthday is tomorrow. Having kids made it difficult to go out and celebrate both, so we usually focused on my hubby’s birthday.
This year we thought we’d try something a little different. We have three kids, two beautiful daughters and an amazing son. (see above photo) Tonight, instead of going to dinner with the love of my life, I’m taking my son out on a date. My husband is going to take our girls out. We are both very excited about tonight’s festivities. We’ll be able to show how to act on a date, expectations, etc. I’m excited about some one-on-one time with my boy. He is funny, charming and oh-so-entertaining.
I think this will become a family tradition. That is until they begin official dating. Which, let’s be honest, I’m not planning on allowing them to do until they’re 30…
Last night I registered for this event, http://toughmudder.com/. Today is confession time. I’m scared. I’m come on…did you watch the video? Did you see the underwater tubey-things? The 10,000 volts of electricity? The HUGE leap into the lake? Schneickys, what was I thinking???
I re-read the Tough Mudder Facts:
Fact #1: Marathon running is boring. With this I concur. Don’t get me wrong. I love running. But for 26.2 miles? No thanks, I’ll stick to the half-marathons.
Fact #2: Mudders do not take themselves too seriously. Well, that fits me to a T! I’m too clumsy and don’t use my mouth-filter enough to take myself seriously.
Fact #3: You cannot complete a Tough Mudder course alone. That one got me. I’ve done a lot of training by myself. But have found when I needed to run my longer runs, it truly helps to run with friends. I love the way Tough Mudder addresses this…check it:
To get through mud, fire, ice-water, and 10,000 volts of electricity you’ll need teammates to pick you up when your spirits dip. To get over 12 foot walls and through underground mud tunnels, you’ll need teammates to give you a boost and a push. Tough Mudders are team players who make sure no one gets left behind. To that end, all Mudders are expected to uphold our ideals and exhibit teamwork and camaraderie both on the course and off it. All participants are asked to join us in reciting the Tough Mudder pledge before starting each event.
How rocking cool is that? I’ll tell you how rocking cool, so rocking cool! Before they start an event they recite the pledge…together. Get it? The participants are all in it together. Working together, accomplishing together, celebrating together. Sounds a little like life, or what life should be. Remember the quote, “It takes a village”? I do, and I believe it.
Wanna join me? Come on, recite the pledge with me…
